Reshaping Notions of Women in Leadership

Should There Be a Glass Ceiling at all?

In a bid to create a notable transformation and increase women’s participation in leadership roles, companies are creating a pipeline of female leaders from their existing employees to lead the organisation in the future.

Continued efforts in the form of structured mentorship, sponsorship, improved infrastructure, and networking platforms dedicated to women are key steps in helping women climb the professional ladder and ensure that there are more women leading enterprises across the world.

How can women take on roles that shatter the glass ceiling? Should it even exist?

Rising women leaders share their views on the need for higher women leadership in Corporate India and how women can shatter the glass ceiling at AccelHERate 2021 —  India’s biggest (virtual) B2B conference for companies — on March 5.

At the table were:

  • Prerna Goel, Head of Customer Experience, Clearbank
  • Amrita Deepak, Associated with a Global Financial Firm
  • Ganga Ganapathi, VP, Head of Marketing & Client Success, Epsilon, India
  • Geethy Panicker, Sr. Vice President, Risk, HSBC
  • Jagruthi Priya, Director, Strategy & Program Mgt at a reputed Fintech MNC
  • Aruna Kumaraswamy, Partner, S.R. Batliboi
  • Sharmila Senthilraja, Industry Executive, SAP
  • Bhuvanaa Subramanyan, Chief Marketing Officer, Randstad India
  • Sunitha Mannatil, Commercial Assets Manager (IT) & Thailand Business Manager, Diageo
  • Jahanara Rahuldev, Sr. Director, Project Leadership, Parexel

Key highlights

Bhuvanaa Subramanyan rightly pointed out that diversity doesn’t boil down to just business results. Diversity in thought and action, a holistic management approach, creating employee engagement brings in better governance standards.

Ganga Ganapathy highlighted that organisations with a healthy gender diversity are more innovative, as they have stronger teams — mixed gender teams, because men and women work better when they work together. Because of this organisations enjoy better business and financial outcomes.

Women represent a large chunk of the customer base. If you don’t have women involved in the making of these products, it’s impossible to understand the audience.

The conversation brought out several important aspects of women leadership not just within corporate culture, but also providing opportunities for women from the grassroots level to skill up and make a difference in their communities.

Studies have shown that diverse talents drive better results; more women leaders enhances performance, profit and is inspiring for future generations.

Companies with a higher percentage of diversity in their executive boards outperform those who do not!

This insightful discussion about women in leadership by rising women leaders drove home the most important point — that diversity at every level in the organisation is imperative not just for profitability, but also for more inclusive decision making processes.
