Prior to the announcement of the union budget on February 1, 2023, there were different expectations from various stakeholders that the upcoming budget, being on the cusp of an election, would provide a much-needed boost to economic growth. This was particularly crucial in light of the ongoing recession, the year-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and the changing geopolitical landscape of a post-pandemic world, which has led to a shift towards more inward-looking policies.

In today's highly specialized job market, where the use of advanced technology such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) is widespread across industries, having a highly skilled workforce is critical.

In anticipation of the budget, corporate leaders and experts have put forward a wishlist for the year 2023.

Let’s have a look at different wishlists.

Dr Yaj Medury, Vice Chancellor, of Mahindra University says: "The value of developing cognitive thinking, problem-solving and management capabilities can hardly be overemphasised. The Union Budget 2023-24 needs to ensure that education is given the requisite budgetary support to power innovation and bridge the talent-skill gap in India."

On talent, a special focus needs to be on women, given their distinct economic role and the need to reduce the gender-gap in our workforce.

Neha Bagaria, Founder & CEO, JobsForHer says: "The government should focus on broadening the domestic economy and creating new employment opportunities with a special focus on building the female economy." She suggests that the government should also consider offering tax sops to organisations that hire more women and should come up with strategies to rationalise equal pay for men and women."

While skill development needs a lot of attention, climate change is not far behind. The industry is looking up to the Union Budget for steps to fight the climate crisis.
