Role Summary/Purpose: The lead controls engineer works in a global, digital-industrial environment and is dedicated to the development, improvement and quality assurance of wind turbine control systems.
This role provides first-hand knowledge of wind turbines & wind turbine controls system design.
It also provides exposure to remote fleet level management of thousands of installed wind turbines as well as the controls software development process.
Qualifications/Requirements:• BS/MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or similar field with Renewable Energy emphasis preferred.
• 5 years of experience relevant to wind turbine control system design.
• 5 years of experience with MATLAB Simulink
• Knowledge of wind turbine generator physical principles.
• Ability to succeed in a global team environment. Team player with strong communication skills.
• Self-starter, who delivers results with minimal supervision.
• Willingness to travel approximately 10% of the time
Essential Responsibilities:Primary responsibilities include the development of robust software architecture, standards and documentation, as well as customer issue resolution, systematic continuous improvement, feature development, software build/release and testing / validation.

Occasionally, the engineer might be called to support wind turbine prototype testing and/or field validation in addition to controls software development activities.


• Lead all phases of controls software development for wind turbine and hybrid wind turbine systems.
• Compile, develop and document requirements for wind turbine controls features and components
• Analyze turbine fleet performance and identify opportunities to improve turbine availability, energy production and lifecycle costs
• Derive controls strategy for optimal operability, reliability, availability and protection
• Work closely with platform and commercial leaders to understand requirements for complete farm-level and SCADA product needs and translate to specific product features and operability
• Develop and validate controls software
• Contribute to product configuration management, sustaining and customer support
• Maintain control of the safety aspects of the Wind Turbine as software and electrical components change.
• Contribute to Controls Design Practices to implement failure prevention.
• Support product development programs design review discussions and present relevant design details to chief engineers for evaluation and approval.
• Collaborate with other Engineering and Global Research Center teams on new wind turbine control technology and lead design implementation efforts.
• Occasionally travel to site to support product testing and validation
Desired Characteristics:• Broad technical knowledge of wind turbines.
• Experience in modeling, controls, dynamics, testing, and design of wind turbines.
• Skilled in control system design for wind turbine applications, including advanced controls.
• Knowledgeable in wind turbine certification, including IEC and GL requirements
• Experienced in development and review of wind turbine certification standards.
• Experienced in modeling and simulating wind turbines in computer simulation codes, such as ADAMS, Bladed, Flex5, and FAST, Simulink or equivalent industry simulation tools.
• Experienced in validation of wind turbine simulation codes in comparison to measurement data.
• Experienced in development and validation of computer simulation codes for wind turbines, and development of control system methodology and subroutines for modeling of control systems.
• Extensive experience in development, validation of wind turbine controls algorithms, and data analysis.
• Experienced in performing analysis and evaluation of loads data and measurement sensors.
• Experience with GE Mark controller.
• Experience with Bachmann controller.
• Experience with non-GE Wind monitoring, control and automation hardware and software.
• Understanding of security aspects of software and networks.
• Understanding of electric utility transmission and distribution systems.
