What will you do at Ciena?Within Ciena’s Converged Packet Optical family of products we are looking for a candidate with broad Linux and middleware experience to join our team of embedded software development professionals. Together, we will build the platforms that support convergence of the WaveLogic Photonics and IP packet layers of the global network.
** NOTE: We are looking to hire for multiple roles from intermediate up to and including
senior levels.
Responsibilities
Implement cross-platform base and middleware software and services. This software will span multi-core embedded CPUs, SOCs, packet processors, L2/L3 switch ASICs, Ethernet PHYs, FPGAs, and optics.

Implementation and extend services, utilities and applications that are common to all platforms to support specific product requirements
Participating in all stages of software development - requirements analysis, design and prototyping, implementation, testing, and eventually maintenance support.
Troubleshoot hardware and software, as well as performance issues. Work with hardware, software, verification and system engineering teams to identify root causes for issues.
Help to investigate and collect information to resolve process, design and field issues found on current or previous designs.
Identifying software performance improvements through test driven development, automated unit testing, and comprehensive integration testing.
Engage with Product Owners and System Architects to evolve and invigorate the platform, such that it can continue to adopt and support new features and technologies.
Influence the software architecture, in order to improve resiliency, debuggability and maintainability.
ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
5+ years of experience in embedded Linux.
10+ years of experience in an embedded software design role.
Broad experience in multiple aspects of embedded Linux.
Knowledge of the physical design and architecture of embedded Linux systems.
General Broadcom Ethernet switching experience: Forwarding Tables, Filters, Ingress Field Processor, MAC, PHY, Autoneg.
Broad experience in multiple aspects of embedded Linux including docker containers
Knowledge of the physical design and architecture of embedded Linux systems.
In-depth experience with the Linux kernel, device drivers, Universal I/O, Kernel Modules.
In-depth experience with Linux memory management and page allocation.
Practical experience with core dump analysis and profiling tools.
Comfortable in a lab environment and able to integrate software onto custom hardware.
Ability to build and install a custom GNU Toolchain.
Familiarity with the Linux build-process.
Working knowledge of Virtualization Technology, desktop simulation.
Software development expertise, particularly large-scale embedded software development in C/C++ and Object oriented design.
Expertise in highly concurrent systems (good knowledge of mutual exclusion, synchronization, interrupt handling, inter-process communication, scheduling, resource management, user/kernel space interactions, etc.)
Shell Programming in bash, Perl and Python.
Familiarity with PCI/PCIe enumeration.
Strong problem solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and perform fault isolation and usage of source code debug tools.
Compute platform: NXP/freescale T/P series processors, ARM
Board Bring up, boot loaders, uBoot
Device Drivers: CPLD, FPGA, I2C, PCIe, SPI, PM/SM-BUS, eMMC, Flash, ethernet devices, PHY, Power monitor devices
design/debugging tools: gdb, codeWarrior
