The Predicament of Returning Mothers

A qualitative study of perceptions around Maternity & Career

The Genpact Centre for Women's Leadership (GCWL) will be hosting a roundtable on April 25, 2018
to discuss the predicament of returning mothers and career progression. We would like to invite
Human Resources and Diversity & Inclusion professionals in the New Delhi area to be part of the
discussion.

Background
Currently, less than one third of working age women participate in the Indian labour force. Almost
half of all employed women drop out of the workforce just before they turn 30. Women in India
often do not follow a linear career progression. Unlike their male counterparts, women are laden
with the "double burden" of child care and work due to which they take up part-time positons,
reduced or flexible hours.
Realising this, the government and corporate sector have crafted a host of new policy measures and
initiatives to deal with work-life conflict for the female workforce. Maternity Benefit Amendment Bill
2016 extended the maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks. Initiatives by companies range from flexible
working hours to child care facilities. However, not many of these initiatives helped in retaining
women at work post maternity. According to a report by AVTAR-I WIN over 60% of Indian women
are unsure about continuing work after childbirth.

Report Launch
In this context, GCWL conducted a training needs analysis to understand the need gaps of women
employees, as well understand the requirements from the human resource departments across
sectors. The report launch on April 25, 2018 will bring together prominent leaders, human resources
and diversity & inclusion professionals from the corporate and development sector to discuss the
key findings of the research and deliberate over the way forward for retaining talent.
