Upskilling yourself before getting back to work is a vital step in your transition to the working world, but not many women understand its importance.

They often take shortcuts or a short free course that doesn’t help them much.

“Whatever courses you do, make sure they are in line with what role you hope to get into going forward. Make sure you do courses that support your move into that industry,” says JobsForHer mentor Sonali Sinha.

As Founder and CEO of Soaring Eagles Learning — an innovative learning and development company — Sonali has many years of experience in helping women in their journey back to work.

She has 23 years of experience across different industries, starting with investment banking, where she spent 16 years, and then onto an NGO called Dignity Foundation, where she ran the organisation for 3 years.

Driven by a call to work for social impact, Sonali then founded Soaring Eagles Learning, where her team provides training and coaching for corporates and individuals. She also works closely with JobsForHer’s women candidates who are on a break and want to get back to work.

“I’ve faced a fair bit of transitions in my own life, but at each stage I was very clear in terms of what I wanted to do. Since I was able to make those transitions successfully, I hope I can help other women gain clarity on how to go about this process,” she says.

In a specially curated Expert Chat on JobsForHer Groups, Sonali answered questions by working women and women on a break who want to get back to work.

“The way you write your resume is very important. Avoid highlighting any prior experience that may not be relevant for the role you’re applying for. Instead, customise your resume according to the company or industry you’re applying to,” she says.

Throughout the Expert Chat, Sonali provides invaluable advice to women who are trying their best to get back to work.

“Spend some time figuring out your areas of interest, what kind of work you enjoyed in your previous organisation and what your strengths and skill sets are.

Also, take some time to explore the reskilling programs offered on JobsForHer, which can help you design your resume better and build the confidence to do well in interviews,” Sonali says.
