Job PurposeThe Competitive Intelligence Lead / Advisor will deliver a suite of products that help answer key questions from business leaders. The job requires end to end delivery of products focused ranging from opportunity identification, competitor profiling, global competitive reviews and in-depth topical or regional deep dives. He / She will manage delivery through strong project management, hands-on analysis and synthesis, guiding team members, collaborating with global teams, business stakeholders, subject matter experts and internal customers.Principal Accountabilities:Manages client account, involving two key components:
  • Own Delivery: Take end to end ownership and accountability of specific competitive intelligence products / projects, and deliver through information gathering, analysis, synthesis and report out. He / She will manage delivery through strong project management, hands-on analysis and synthesis, guiding team members, collaborating with global teams, business stakeholders, subject matter experts and internal customers.Principal Accountabilities:Manages client account, involving two key components:
  • Own Delivery: Take end to end ownership and accountability of specific competitive intelligence products / projects, and deliver through information gathering, analysis, synthesis and report out.   • Co-ordinate with SCI teams: Several of the products are recurring in nature, and need to be delivered with significant inputs from others in the larger natural team. The incumbent holds accountability, while ensuring contribution from others as needed and an appropriate level of quality assurance.
  • Is accountable for driving integration of information / viewpoints with several groups:
  • Strategy Consultancy: Interfaces with Strategy Consultancy Support team, and if required, with Consulting Managers / Strategy Consultants on Upstream Projects to receive / provide inputs in case of common scope of projects.
  • SCI NTR (Non-Technical Risk) Leads and Advisors: Interfaces with NTR Leads and Advisors in SCI teams to leverage their expertise and obtain inputs on macro-economic and geo-political trends relevant for the CI products
  • Brings own strong subject matter expertise in one or more areas of the oil and gas value chain and has a good working level knowledge of other areas business
  • Leads end to end delivery of projects - scoping, planning, day to day analysis, coordinating efforts of members across teams, client interface, conducting own analysis and report out
  • Supports junior team members by providing guidance for day to day project delivery and coaching on subject matter or functional skills
  • Builds own network in Shell and with external service providers, to identify synergies, obtain / validate required data and viewpoints, and socialize findings to all relevant audience
  • Demonstrates and promotes top quartile project delivery by strict adherence to quality framework and provide inputs for enhancing the framework.
  • Staff – No direct reports but significant elements of coaching junior team members is involved.
Delivery Dimensions and Key ProductsThe incumbent holds end-to-end accountability for providing recommendations / actionable insights for senior leaders and involve close teamwork with several global teams.Projects encompass assessing long / short term strategic direction, asset portfolio analysis (investments / divestments), cost and performance comparison / benchmarking, value chain analysis, inputs for opportunity identification / framing, regulatory landscape, and evolving trends and challenges in business environment. The projects duration is 4-12 weeks, and the person is accountable for delivering 6-8 projects end-to-end, in addition to contributing to multiple other projects and supervising efforts of members in own and adjacent teams.End to end delivery of complex projects or studies for Competitive Intelligence and Portfolio teams on specific opportunities, and other assessment that serves as input for opportunity identification and addresses key questions of business leaders.
  • Support Strategy Consultancy with specific and short turnaround studies (1-2 weeks) relating to specific aspects of the broader strategy projects
  • Competitive Intelligence requests in response to specific developments/events in the industry
  • Specialty deep dives related to strategic aspects of competitors, impact of their entry into new markets and what does it mean for Shell
  • Delivery of Quarterly Competitive Reviews to end customer
  • Working closely with businesses to deliver significant portions of competitor deep dives
  • Projects involving scope of pre-work and/or facilitation pertaining to areas of War gaming/ Game Theory/ Decision Planning tools
  • Close coordination with the natural team to obtain inputs will be required on following products:
  • LoB Quarterly Competitor Reviews
  • Thematic Global CI packs – Integrated Gas, Deepwater, Conventional Oil
  • Exploration-related inputs for deep dives
Key Challenge(s)As the products are delivered to senior leadership, the depth of insights and analysis needs to be of highest levels of quality, in order to produce unique and actionable insights. Because of the end to end delivery accountability of the products, the incumbent should be an experienced self-starter with an entrepreneurial mind set, who can work with minimum day-to-day supervision. Because of the responsibility to manage the products (rather than execute well defined tasks), the incumbent should demonstrate high levels of ownership, self-motivation and customer centricity.Job Knowledge, Skills & ExperienceEducation and Experience
  • Commercial / Technical degree; MBA would be an advantage, but a sound industry experience can compensate for not having an MBA
  • Typically 7 - 12 years of professional experience in Oil & Gas related industries/ Oil & Gas related research / consulting. Exposure to a Upstream / Integrated Gas business through commercial / research / consulting role will be a significant advantage
Skills required
  • Market research, financial analysis
  • Project delivery skills involving planning own work, delivering hands-on and coordinating with a wide set of teams
  • Awareness on key trends and geopolitics in Oil & Gas space
  • Ability to gather and analyze complex data resulting in synthesis and insights
  • Direct exposure to O&G business, wider affinity with energy policies/regulatory aspects and working knowledge of financial statements would be a plus

  • High motivation levels and sense of accountability to deliver assigned components of work without close day to day supervision. Flexibility to take feedback and guidance from senior team members and stakeholders
  • Good communication skills and credibility enabling person to convey complex issues and concepts in a clear and concise manner
