Midge’s first (paid) job was that of a saleswoman, and she didn’t even feel the need to convince her parents, who sat in astonishment when she told them she was going to work. She had also just separated from her husband, the father of her 2 young children. 

The #JFHReviewHERs this week takes a look at Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel, a character in the Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, set in 1950’s New York City.

Played by Rachel Brosnahan, Midge sets out on her own with her first job in the cosmetics section at a high-end department store, but along the way discovers her knack for stand-up comedy.

She fearlessly takes a poke at her own tragic life, night after night in clubs across the city, as material for her comic act. Following her separation from her husband, Midge goes through several ups & downs but seamlessly turns them all into a hilarious set of jokes on stage, through the series.  

A character who is so close to us in so many ways, yet so desirable for her sheer determination and wit to handle the challenges that life throws at her, this fem-centric series is a must-watch.
